Leon Trotsky (1879–1940) was a Russian Marxist revolutionary, theorist, and one of the central figures of the Russian Revolution of 1917. Born Lev Davidovich Bronstein in what is now Ukraine, he became politically active as a teenager and spent much of his early life in exile, prison, or on the run because of his revolutionary activities against the Russian Empire.
